Jenny Peterson is ‘extremely excited’ to bring her business, and to be the first business to open in a multi-million dollar downtown Port Huron development this January.
Be Je Salon is co-owned by Peterson and her mother Bev Lasky. Their salon is expected to be the first business to open in the Wrigley Center, pending contractors and construction timelines.
The business will have stations for all the hair salon essentials, such as hair coloring, cuts and treatments.
“It’s really exciting to be the first (business) in here,” Peterson said. “I’m excited to see how it all develops.”
Peterson said they want to have the salon’s grand opening on Jan. 16. The salon is currently located at 808 Lapeer Ave. in Port Huron.
Peterson has been a business owner since 1998. She started with the Body Boutique, which focused on massages, facials and waxing services. In 2007, she changed the business’s name to Be Je Salon and changed its focus to haircare. She said she chose the Wrigley Center as a new location because she thought it would be a perfect fit for the salon.
“I travel teaching hair color and I’ve been to many salons with the same kind of set up as the Wrigley,” Peterson said. “I knew this was an opportunity I wanted to take.”
Be Je Salon will be bringing back its body treatment services once it opens in the new location.
The salon in the Wrigley Center will have 10 hair stations each with its own stylist. Currently, seven stylists are confirmed to start working at the salon.
All the equipment will be new and will include six fully adjustable hair wash stations, ceiling-hung blow dryers, three color processors, three sit-in hair dryers, a color bar and two body treatment rooms.
Peterson’s goal is to not have a gap between closing her current location and opening the new one.
“We plan on finishing our last client in the Lapeer location on Jan. 14, moving everything that weekend and then open the following Monday,” Peterson said.
Peterson and Lasky wanted to make sure they stayed local in opening their new space, working with Mortimer Lumber, Martin Construction, Independent Flooring, Countertop Direct, Ainsworth Electric, Superior Heating and Cooling, Zaya’s Painting and Masters Plumbing Inc.
Peterson and Lasky were born and raised in Port Huron. Peterson said she wants to help build a sustainable downtown for future generations.
All of the stylists at Be Je Salon will be independent. Peterson said she thinks of herself as a leader rather than a boss. She sees her stylists as partners, and she wants to do what is best for them. Lasky said her daughter is easy to work with and a dependable business owner.
“She’s loyal to the people who work for her, and she does what is best for them and the business,” Lasky said.
Peterson said she wants to create an environment where her clients can relax and unplug from the outside world.
