The Wharton School’s MBA program was ranked No. 3 overall and No. 1 in the consulting and finance specialization categories in an annual report by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a company that ranks top global universities.

For the 2023 global full-time MBA program rankings, Wharton came in behind Stanford Graduate School of Business and Harvard Business School, which ranked first and second respectively. Last year, Wharton and Harvard tied for second. In this year’s report, Wharton also ranked No. 4 in information management, No. 18 in marketing, and No. 10 in entrepreneurship.

QS, a British company specializing in analyzing higher education institutions, analyzed global MBA programs in 47 countries using five data lenses, with Employability as the primary metric. It also used the lenses Entrepreneurship and Alumni Outcomes, Return on Investment, Thought Leadership, and Class & Faculty Diversity in its analysis.

Penn received the world’s highest score for Thought Leadership, an indicator which was determined by a school’s academic reputation, research impact, and percentage of faculty with PhDs.

According to a press release written by QS Communications Manager Will Barbieri, the United States dominated this year’s global business school rankings. Of the 300 programs ranked, 115 were American. Business schools located in the U.S. comprised five of the top 10 spots and 40 of the top 100 spots.

In addition to overall global business school rankings, QS also ranked the top business schools based on seven MBA career specializations, including consulting, information management, operations management, finance, marketing, technology, and entrepreneurship. The rankings were determined by a school’s success in three broad categories: Career Placement, Employer Reputation, and Research Strength.

QS published the first issue of QS World University Rankings in 2004 and began ranking the world’s top MBA programs in 2015. The Wharton School received its highest ranking in 2021 at second place.
