No. 1 Alabama is on upset alert as the Crimson Tide are tied with Texas 10-10 at halftime in a wild game in Austin. The Longhorns had an opportunity to take the lead going into the half, but missed a 20-yard field goal as the final seconds ticked off the clock.
The big story of the day is Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, who exited the game toward the end of the first quarter after suffering an apparent upper body injury on a late tackle from Alabama linebacker Dallas Turner. Before going out, Ewers completed 9 of 12 passes for 134 yards passing. In relief, Hudson Card added 59 yards on six pass attempts.
That would spell danger for the Longhorns, but Alabama has kept them in the game behind uncharacteristically undisciplined play. Alabama quarterback Bryce Young has 78 yards passing, but only 14 yards have come to receivers, who have dropped numerous easy passes to stall the offense. Additionally, the Crimson Tide have committed 11 penalties in the first half, with All-American linebacker Will Anderson having three offsides penalties on his own, which is the most from the program in a first half since 2010. The Crimson Tide maxed out at 11 penalties in a single game last season, both of which came in road games.
Alabama has not lost a nonconference game since ULM in 2007, Nick Saban’s first season in Tuscaloosa … but the Crimson Tide also haven’t played a true nonconference road game since 2011.
