Punjab former Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu to be produced before court, heavy security arrangements made outside. The Punjab Vigilance Bureau arrested Congress leader and former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu on Monday evening in the alleged food grains transportation tenders scam. He was arrested from Ludhiana, officials said. Ashu’s arrest came hours after he along with other senior Punjab Congress leaders “presented” themselves at the Vigilance Bureau office in Mohali, saying it could detain any of them as they were fed up with the AAP government in Punjab levelling corruption allegations against them.

Sukhwinder Singh and Sudhir Sangwan, main accused in the murder case of actor and BJP leader Sonali Phogat, have been sent to 10-day police custody. The Police arrested Edwin Nunes, owner of Curlies Beach Shack in Anjuna, and also a suspected drug peddler Dattprashad Gaonkar taking the total arrests in the case to four. “Drug peddler who had supplied drugs (to accused) has been arrested. The owner of the shack where drugs were found has been arrested too. The investigation is going on well. Multiple teams are working. We will send one team to Haryana too,” said Jaspal Singh, Director General of Police.

Two earthquakes hit J-K; total 13 tremors in five days
Two mild earthquakes struck Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, officials said. The tremors of magnitude 2.9 and 3.4 were reported within a span of over four-and-a-half hours in the morning, they said. With this, a total of 13 earthquakes having mild intensity had hit Doda, Kishtwar, Katra (Reasi) and Udhampur districts of the Jammu province since Tuesday.

Former imam of Mecca’s Grand Mosque jailed for 10 years
A Saudi court has sentenced a prominent former imam of the Grand Mosque in Mecca to 10 years in prison, Middle East Eye reported. The Specialised Criminal Appeals Court in Riyadh sentenced Sheikh Saleh al Talib to prison after overturning a previous acquittal, US-based rights group Democracy for the Arab World Now (Dawn) said.
Saudi authorities first detained Talib in 2018 and gave no reason for his arrest, which came after he delivered a sermon criticising the General Entertainment Authority, a government body in charge of regulating the entertainment industry, according to activists, Middle East Eye reported.

Jharkhand Governor Ramesh Bais is likely to send the order of disqualification of Chief Minister Hemant Soren as an MLA to the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday, Raj Bhavan sources said. Members of the state’s ruling coalition will gather for the third round of meeting in the morning at the chief minister’s residence in the midst of intense speculation about the political fate of Soren, whose assembly membership hangs in balance over a mining lease case.
“The governor will sign the disqualification order today and it will be sent to the ECI,” a Raj Bhavan source told PTI.

Russia’s attack on a Ukrainian train station that killed more than 20 people this week is the latest in a series of strikes on the country’s railway system that some international legal scholars say may be war crimes. While Russia claimed that it had targeted the train because it was carrying Ukrainian troops and equipment on Wednesday, an Associated Press reporter on the ground said there was no visible indication that Ukrainian troops were among the dead, who included children. If civilians were the target, experts said Thursday, the attack could be considered a war crime.

Rain emergency declared in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday declared a rain emergency in several districts with immediate effect till August 30 after disaster management officials warned that the Swat River has reached “high to very high” flood levels. The emergency was declared on the recommendation of the district administration and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) after flash floods wreaked havoc in Swat, Shangla, Mingora, Kohistan and other areas.
More polio virus detected in upstate New York wastewater
State health officials in New York are warning of expanding “community spread” of the polio virus after it was found in wastewater samples from another upstate county. The state Department of Health said Friday the polio virus was detected in four samples from Sullivan County, two each in July and August. Sullivan County is several dozen miles northwest of Rockland County, where officials on July 21 announced the first case of polio in the United States in nearly a decade. The unidentified young adult was unvaccinated.
